EFFECTIVE LEARNING AND TEACHING - POLICY

INTRODUCTION

The school needs to need to ensure that effective learning and teaching is taking place amongst all pupils.  Effective learning and teaching can be considered to be taking place when pupils are fulfilling their potential in an environment which is positive and constructive.

EVALUATION OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING AND TEACHING

The constantly changing environment of a school means that it is necessary to have ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of the teaching and learning processes.  Everyone involved with the school has a responsibility to be involved in the evaluation processes and in reflecting on the achievements and progress of the pupils.  Evaluation will take place both formally as part of the daily life of this school and more formally in a structured and systematic manner.  The following are guidelines for what is involved:

Pupils:

should develop the skills of reviewing their progress, making realistic assessments of their success in learning particular skills, and setting appropriate targets.
should be willing to discuss their progress with teachers and have the opportunity for such discussions.
Teachers:

should reflect on the success of what is happening  in their classrooms and make themselves aware of the progress of their pupils.
should be willing to contribute and participate in regular departmental evaluation of courses and implement any necessary changes.

Principal Teachers:

should ensure that there is regular ongoing monitoring of the progress of pupils within the department.
should set up systems for the evaluation of courses, teaching and learning within the department.
Senior Management:

should be aware of the experiences of pupils in the school through their regular contact with pupils, parents and staff.
should provide opportunities and support for the formal evaluation of the learning and teaching processes within Mintlaw Academy.

Parents:

should take an interest in, and have an awareness of, the progress of their child`s learning.
should participate in the formal opportunities to review the successes of their child at Mintlaw Academy, such as at Parents` Evenings
